How do you implement order of operations?

We apply the standard "PEMDAS" rule on the final equation: we will perform multiplication and division first, and then addition and subtraction. Note that we apply this only after your equation is complete, not as you are building it.

Why didn't 3 + 1 x 2 = 8 work?

Multiplication and division are always performed before addition and subtraction (see the above question on order of operations). While you may have wanted to multiply (3 + 1) by 2 to get 8, that equation really adds 3 to (1 x 2), which equals 5.
